Differences Between Conventional Data Backup Systems and Rollback RX - Near Continuous Data Backup

line
Historically, our defense against a hard drive crash has been a complete disk image kept at a physically separate location - this image is copied back on to a replacement hard drive. This is the foundation of all Data Backup Software (MS Backup, Ghost, etc.) – the physical imaging of data.

But image-based backups have two major problems: they are very resource-hungry and they require a lot of manual intervention. So arduous is this that even disciplined IT shops do it as infrequently as is possible. Most small businesses and individuals seldom get around to doing backups.

But when the time comes to restore – the older the backup, the more work is lost. There is some “logging” software that tries to maintain continuous change tracking, but again, it is very demanding on resources.

As disk hardware is very stable, the impulse to defer a backup is high. But content corruption has become a major issue. Spyware, Adware, faulty “Upgrades”, incomplete Uninstalls, Key Loggers, Root Kits, and Viruses hit us almost daily. Firewalls, anti-viruses and intrusion detectors lessen the risks, but it is a question of “when” security will be breached, not “if”. The need for a frequent, fast, and efficient backup and restore has never been greater.

Now, Horizon DataSys has come out with RollBack Rx Pro™ that takes a bit-level snapshot of your hard drive in 1 to 3 seconds. You read that correctly, that’s seconds! Rollback Rx is based on a groundbreaking new technology called “incremental sector mapping”. This technology gives it its blazing snapshot speed. And, as only changed sectors are snapshot – the more often you use it, the faster it works. I can’t think of a better encouragement to use it more often.

At Horizon DataSys for example, all the machines in their network are set on an automatic hourly snapshot. When asked why they were doing such frequent backups, President Lyle Patel’s answer was, “’…because we can!” There is literally zero impact on productivity - machines marginally slow for about one second an hour.

And that’s not all. The Rollback Rx Restore function is a true bit-for-bit recovery of the complete hard drive. Pick any snapshot and get back everything as of that point in time: the programs, the drivers, the data, the Registry settings, everything. Rollback Rx even recovers the contents of your Recycle Bin! And how long does that take? Try about 3 seconds plus a restart.

Also, Rollback Rx will store 60,000 snapshots in less than 0.1% of your disk. Multiple restore points are available to you. So, even if you don’t know when your drive was infected, you can step back gingerly until you are clear.

Back from the future - using continuous data backup snapshots

But, if you have to revert a day, a week or a month, what about all the lost work? Believe it or not, Rollback RX recovers data from the future! Let us say that you go back to a snapshot from a month ago. You can ask Rollback Rx to “recover data to latest image”. Rollback RX will hunt forward and update data files (only) from any later snapshots you have taken! If you do hourly snapshots – well, you get the picture.

Here is how you would recover even more. You get an error or discover an infection. Close out all open documents and take an immediate snapshot, infection, error and all. Use Rollback RX to go back to the last clean baseline and ask it to recover data forward. Now, you’ve got every last keystroke back.

A Real Example

Rollback Rx’s performance sounds almost miraculous, but I can personally attest to it. Here is my (Robin Chakravarti) actual experience of my first Snapshot and a Restore. Using MS Backup: As a benchmark, I backed up my work system: (XP Pro SP2, Kaspersky, MS Office and some data files – altogether around 6 GB). It estimated 4 hours and 40 minutes and an additional 4.3 GB to back up to a second internal hard drive. I tried to work, but the machine just crawled during the backup so, around 2 hours in, I cancelled the job. Does this sound familiar?

Using Rollback Rx Pro: With the same 6 GB system, I did the first snapshot – it took 3 seconds, 400K used. I then immediately took second snapshot – it took 1 second, zero K used. It was so fast that, frankly, I had my suspicions that Rollback was really doing anything.

Then, at my boss’s urging, I deleted the following: MyDocs, MS Office and almost all of \System32 (!).I cleaned all the icons off y Desktop. He wanted me to continue deleting things till I got a BSoD. By this time, I thought I was totally toast anyway and to go on till a BSoD would be overkill. I then took the “restore” option on Rollback. The machine restarted, and offered me a choice of restore points. I selected one and 3 seconds later, EVERYTHING was back- my icons, \System32, MyDocs, MS Office, everything. My “recently opened files” lists were restored into every application. Even my Recycle Bin was back!

Continuous Data Backup snapshots - differences from Microsoft System Restore

XP has a built-in System Restore function, but this is restricted to recovering (some not all) system files only. This means that you can uninstall a failing driver or update, but nothing else. Now newer malware survives a System Restore. In addition, System Restore has a certain (ahem!) unfortunate reputation.

Rollback Rx recovers every single bit on the drive. It will recover a system from BSoD, the Blue Screen of Death. It will even rescue a PC whose drive has been formatted AND Fdisked!

Enterprise version

Rollback Rx Pro comes in an Enterprise version that permits remote management of snapshots and rollbacks. Working through a web interface, the security manager can manage any machine in a network from anywhere. This version is popular with large commercial Customers.

Continous restore from Data Backup for Public Access Machines

Rollback Rx also comes in a “Standard” version which is now sold as Drive Vaccine PC Restore - that permits only a single snapshot, and not the 60,000 permitted by the RollBack Rx client. This snapshot can automatically be restored on logoff or restart; so the next user can have a clean baseline system. This version is popular with institutions with a lot of Public Access machines such as School Districts and Libraries.

Goback compared to RollBack Rx

RollBack Rx Norton GoBack Comparison Result

Does not reserve any portion of hard disk for "protected data". The program data structure takes 0.07% of disk space to create up to 60,000 snapshots.

Goback's Continuous data backup Reserves a portion of hard disk as a buffer to track file changes. The buffer is about 20-30% of disk size.

Goback takes more disk space than Rollback Rx.

The time Rollback Rx takes to restore a snapshot is independent from the amount of information contained in the snapshot.

Goback's Continuous data backups takes a longer time to restore a checkpoint as more information is stored in the buffer.

GoBack takes longer to restore the computer.

Rollback Rx is a sector level program. It creates "sector maps" of the protected hard disk. It does not track every file change. The system performance is unrelated to the amount of snapshots or the data that has been created.

Goback uses a Continuous data backup buffer to track all the file changes. When more and more information gets accumulated in the buffer, the system performance deteriorates.

Goback slows down the system as more changes are made to the system.

Rollback Rx will not take a snapshot until the user wants to create one; either via a manual snapshot or through a  scheduled task.

Goback's Continuous data backup automatically creates "checkpoints" for the system regardless of  whether the user wants to or not.

Goback's Continuous data backup is less flexible on creating and managing snapshots.

Rollback Rx does not use a buffer. The snapshots will always be there unless user deletes the snapshot.

With Goback; The buffer used to track file changes is a FIFO buffer (First In First Out). Let's say the buffer size is 10GB. If a user copies a couple of DVDs, the buffer will become full. When this occurs the "last checkpoint" will be pushed out the buffer. If this happens, the user would not be able to recover any checkpoint.

You can count on Rollback Rx to be able to recover from any instances or number of files copied etc. There are no surprises. If you have created a snapshot, you know you can always get back to it.

Rollback Rx offers several deployment utilities that allow administrators to remotely and silently deploy Rollback to a network of PCs instantly with pre-set program settings.

N/A - Goback's Continuous data backup can not be seamlessly deployed.

Rollback Rx is more enterprise scalable.

Rollback Rx Enterprise offers a scalable client/server structure. Server can remotely manage client desktops protected by Rollback thru Internet. Rollback Enterprise console always provides various network management related tools.

Goback can not be remotely managed without using third party networking utilities.

Rollback Rx provides more features designed for network administrators of larger organizations.

Rollback Rx comes in two versions, Professional and Server. Professional is ideal for end users or professional users that do not require remote management.  The Server edition consists of the Professional client along with a remote management console and admin dashboard for remote management.

Goback is available in a single end-user version only.

Rollback Rx is more flexible on pricing and marketing strategies.

Rollback Rx can take a snapshot of crashed system from subsystem console and then recover data from the crashed state. This essentially eliminates the "gap of restoring system to an earlier time". This makes Rollback ahead above Goback's Continuous data backup.

Goback does have a subsystem console, however Goback's Continuous data backup console is limited in its functionality.

Rollback Rx has a distinct feature that allow users to recover data from a crashed system in case of BSOD and OS corruption.

In addition to the system restore feature, Rollback Rx is also a strong configuration management solution. Based on its "sector mapping" architecture, users can create several independent snapshots each having different applications and data. User can switch back and forth among the snapshots for configuration management, sales demo, or software training purposes.

Goback, is a file level filtering program. It is not able to create the absolute independent checkpoints" that user can use for configuration management purpose.

Rollback Rx is more than a system restore solution.

"I've been a Goback and RestoreIt user, but stopped because I do defrags daily. As you know, this chews up Goback's Continuous data buffer and RestoreIt's also. I had to manually create more space by deleting files... Rollback RX Pro is just what the doctor order (no pun intended). Kudos to you for creating such a needed utility!" - Mel -

COMPETITOR: SYMANTEC GOBACK®

Formerly known as Roxio Goback, Adaptec Goback, Norton Goback as well as other names, Goback has been sold and transferred frequently from one company to another. We can only assume it has not been pleasing its vendors. Goback is the only competitor software close enough to be shown on the RollBack Rx™ radar screen. Goback's comparison and competitiveness is limited.  Its technology based on a file level monitoring and logging technique. It needs to consume a large chunk of the hard disk space to create a change history file. The monitoring system is picking up every little bit of file changes regardless of whether or not, it is worth to know or see. A simple system restart will generate 100s of file changes to log. It really makes one wonder if more truly is better; in Goback’s case, more is definitely not better. The details file change history logging consumes the hard disk space quickly, not to mention, the tremendous pressure it puts on system resources. Currently Goback does not support Microsoft Vista.

COMPARE: SYMANTEC GHOST®

Formally known as Norton Ghost, Symantec Ghost® is the most popular computer system backup and imaging software. It allows users to make a copy of the entire system to an image file. The file can then be stored on CDs or network servers. In a case of disaster recovery, users can restore the image back onto the computer. The solution offered by Symantec Ghost is a slow solution, it takes several minutes or longer in most cases to create or restore the image file. The Ghost solution is a costly solution, the image file might be as large as the system itself or half of the system size in compressed format; However, compression takes a big toll on restore time. The Ghost solution is also a partial solution. Due to the amount of time and space required to create image files, it is impossible for users to create frequent backup image files. Therefore, in a case of disaster recovery, users are most likely to restore back to the date of initial P.C. setup condition. All the programs, files and data created afterwards are permanently lost.

COMPARED TO: IBM RAPID RESTORE®

Rapid Restore is the latest system recovery solution provided by IBM (now Lenovo) with their new PCs in attempt to replace the OEM recovery CDs. The software reserves a portion of the hard disk space to store a complete factory release image of the system. The reserved disk space is programmed as a hidden partition, inaccessible to most common users; however, an experienced user can remove the hidden partition easily. And thereby, leave the system unrecoverable. As a system imaging software, Rapid Restore shares the same deadly weakness with Symantec Ghost; it is only a partial solution. In a case of disaster recovery, users are set back to the initial factory release condition. All the programs, files and data created afterwards are permanently lost. Rapid Restore is also not rapid, as its name implies.. It takes many minutes to restore a system.

COMPARED WITH: GOLDENSOFT RECOVERY GENIUS®

Recovery Genius® takes the reboot-and-restore concept  further. It works deep within the hard drive and OS drivers and freezes the PC's settings. Technically speaking, its technology is based on a hard disk sector filtering technique. Recovery Genius reserves a portion of the hard disk space for redirecting the disk I/O commands. It allows users to keep the information in the protected space during restarts. It takes significantly less amount of space than the conventional imaging approach. Therefore, the time to restore is much less than Ghost or Rapid Restore. Everything seems ideal so far, until you run the Recovery Genius for the first time! It does not allow you to restore individual files from the backup storage, so it is all or nothing. Unfortunately, you can only get data you HAD and loose data you HAVE when you select a restore. This significant weakness is driving Recovery Genius away from common and corporate users. Recovery Genius is mainly valued as an restore-on-restart solution for the publicly shared PC markets.

As you can clearly see - RollBack Rx is the most advanced computer system and data maintenance software that has ever been created.
  • It offers the most restore points.
  • It takes least amount of disk space.
  • It takes least amount of system resources.
  • It offers most configuration options.
  • It is the fastest to create a restore point.
  • It is among the fastest to restore.
  • It is the only one to allow users to restore without data lost.
  • It is the only one to offer dynamic access control.
  • It is the only one to offer dynamic space management.
  • It is the easiest to operate
